Back again with another edition of Joe’s Music Picks. March has brought good things musically to the people of Hooville. Highlights include not only Tea Leaf Green, Larry Keel and Natural Bridge, but also the upcoming Galactic concert. Spring is upon us, let the music warm our hearts. Music brings all the people together, it brings “we over me”.

Looking ahead, April is going to be solid.

04/05: Antibalas*
04/11: Toubab Krewe* or Trans Am, Zombi, and Psychic Paramount`
04/19: Robert Randolph & The Family Band^
04/22: Acid Mothers Temple`
04/26: Rose Hill Drive`
04/28: Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band#

* Starr Hill
` Satellite Ballroom
^ Charlottesville Pavilion
# Outback Lodge

Grudge Match of the month is Toubab Krewe vs Trans Am. I’m still not sure which I will goto, new age indy craziness or good old hippy get down. I dig the psychic electronic sound of indy and am more or less just discovering it. Major props to Satellite for delivering the goods. On the other hand, I haven’t ever caught Toubab and would love to see them take Starr Hill down. Acid Mothers Temple is a must see. Touring from Japan, AMT shows America how psychedelic rock is done.

Will Satellite continue bringing the goods and top the big guy on the hill’s lame top 40 replays or will Starr Hill wake up and deliver some quality music over the rehashed RIAA quick bucks? I hope so because competition is good. If not for that you get the same old garbage. Starr Hill used to deliver in spades twice a week, now we are lucky to get the phatty goodness twice a month. All things equal though, Coran does bring the love through the Pavilion and perhaps the Jefferson will reopen as a premere midsize venue, however only time will tell.

Did I miss anything? Let me know.

Charlottesville is finally livening up for some jams. Satellite Ballroom has a little love coming, and Starr Hill awakens from a weaker winter season.-

3/10 – Guano Boys @ Satellite
3/20 – Tea Leaf Green (Opening:William Walter & Co.)
3/31 – Hackensaw Boys

Starr Hill has lined up four excellent bands in the final two weeks of March. Hopefully the venue can deliver some solid bands for the Spring but so far we have only a twinkle of the energy delivered in 2006. Looking forward, April is already highlighted by Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra hailing from Brooklyn and Toubab Krewe from Asheville, NC.

On the Corner we always have the Wednesday Night Music Showcase at Orbits, which showcases bands from Charlottesville. You never know what guests might play, previously members of Parliament sat in during some Man Mountain Jr. Meanwhile, In April Satellite Ballroom will feature Acid Mothers Temple; a psychedelic rock band from Japan.

DJ Williams Projekt rolled into Starr Hill Saturday night with an opening act that brought sounds from Waynesborough, VA, and Baltimore, MD. Calf Mountain was charged with warming up the crowd followed by the Bridge. Near the end of the night brought DJ Williams and his saxophone sounds to full peak.

Calf Mountain Jam is a band that I have been watching for about a year and one half. They were one of those bands that you would say, hrmm, give it a year. Well, it has been a year since I thought that and you know what, these guys are really getting it together. They have a small but very solid following. High energy jams with a good groove to move to. That’s what I’m talking about! Calf Mountain is getting it together. Listen to the tape.

The Bridge was the next opener. I was curious about these guys and again, delivery straight down the pipe! Starr Hill’s musical lineup Saturday night was supreme as the jams kept flowing and the talent never stopped. Near the end of the set Gordon Sax and DJ Williams were playing up on stage and I would say the crowd was really filling in with a groove. By the end of this set, everyone was really ready to rock. Excellent first time viewing of The Bridge in my opinion.

DJ Williams Projekt was another strong band that I had not yet had the pleasure of viewing. I missed some parts of the show however in catching with I did I am continuously amazing at the quality of music Virginia has floating about it. From the valley to the capital, tunes flow like water, sparkling in the pristine environment, bars. Yes, here at these bars we experience the vibe that moves the crowd like a current through the ocean, nudging, sometimes harder than you might like, for you to move your butt and get down!

Whats up to my sketchy crew that kept the rig going in my absence.

The Biscuits brought a CD release date to Charlottesville. With tremendous skill, these guys showed what a real jam band can do. The Biscuits brought a furry of dance and energy that hardly another band ever brings. Charlottesville welcomed the band with a line stretching around the venue to get in. I taped however due to a case of still being a noob I had the high gain on the minime still. The tape is just muddled but its all good, I know know and have already changed it to low gain. luckily a pair of kick ass neumans were running behind me. that source will be on the archive. yeah, like this means anything. Bisco played a furious Run Like Hell which was called out by a fellow taper whom which had over 130 disco biscuit shows under the belt as one of the best Runs ever. Helicopters made a great showing in the encore and the band really had the house rocking. my mics were dancing with everyone else as the floors gave to the groove. you could tell there was a slight mix of college students in the air as they wouldn’t shut up. Props to my blockers, sketch crew represented hard and full.
Fucking damn I wish I had the shit on low gain, this bootleg sounds amazing otherwise………

Ween rocked the open air Pavilion Thursday night in Charlottesville. They played some of my favorite tunes that I know of plus I found some new ones to love. Goofyness prevailed as we were on the receiving end of some wacky reggae along and other older ween displays that the band was having a good time. The encore lasted extra long with a full bow by the band at the end. Being that I wouldn’t consider myself a full Ween fan before the show, they rocked the house and I am totally willing to go see them where ever the are close. Read: Will travel for Ween.
After the Pavilion show some of the late night revelers traveled to Starr Hill for the Peen show. Wackiness continued and everyone had a great time.
Notes about the venue:
I believe the pavilion was about half sold out as the crowd really only stretched from the stage to the soundboard. Don’t get me wrong though, that is still a whole lot of people. Up front the crowd was packed in there.

I taped it.

Ghostface Killah of the former Wu Tang Clan brought a change to my usual concert jam band run. Opening up was M1 of Dead Prez and Beetnix, a local Charlottesville group. Hip-hop was in order for the night and Starr Hill brought the action as always. We arrived with Beetnix on the stage. I didn’t catch much but this C-Ville Beetnix has promise, catch em around town.

M1 of Dead Prez had what I thought was the best to offer. One of their tracks was a full call out of George W. Bush and his imperialistic take on how the USA should act. They call him out for starting illegal wars and torturing people and furthermore, they call out for us to take a deep look at how some of our leadership is terrorizing the rest of the world. I really enjoyed that track.

When Ghostface finally got up there it was about 12:15 and the house was ready for him. They belted out the Wu Tang Clan prose with good style. At one point the turntable had some problem which prompted the band to start saying the sound guy fucking sucks or he is fucking up their shit. All things considered, the number of shows I’ve seen at Starr Hill, something leads me to think that it was their gear that was at fault as I hadn’t ever seen a full dropout on any equipment at the music hall, evah.

In the end, I felt that M1 was the beacon of positivie energy that was drowning in a torrential negative downpour. Why does the music have to promote “smacking bitches”. Physical Violence isn’t cool. Virtual violence, well that isn’t too bad, if it was virtual bitch smack down… I dunno. Violence sells, plain and simple but I went out and bought some M1 stuff. Ghostface, I doubt he’ll ever see any more money than what he got off the cut of my ticket.

North Mississippi All-Stars came into Charlottesville last night and fucking rocked it out. Thats right, they blew the house up. If you missed the show, man, it was sick. The crowd was in synch with the band and everyone fed off of it. Buy the end of the second set nmas was jamming with the intensity of a crazy mississippi coon running for its life, knowing all along that its going to get away. With a full set running the whole time and an encore that lasted over four songs, nmas deserves recognition and applaud for their performance. surely, these north mississippi boys know how to party.
