For the first time in fifteen years, Phish is coming to Charlottesville. Moving up from Trax and U-Hall, the quartet has graduated to the JPJ. I don’t think it would be a stretch to propose that this is all Coran’s doing. Thank you Mr. music mogul. Between the Jefferson opening around November and Phish landing in December, Charlottesville looks to be resurrecting some musical spirits. This will actually be Phish’s eighth concert in the city. Check out the stats of their previous trips below. Note that their 1990 concert is not included as they have no known setlist. These statistics are from the original Phish stats site, ZZYZX’s Phish Stats site.

As the camera continues to import pictures involving things which I have found more interesting, I ponder the most incomplete year roundup of information. I promise no more posts this year, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. I predict that at some point in the future, I will be partying on a beach, in the Caribbean, with people who which may be close or even have similar names. Wacky. Pimping ain’t easy. Nah. It’s fucking easy. Sleazy deazy. Schmeazy Wheezy.

Absent babel continues to dominate the thought which is pouring out of the mind. sometimes the top looks very blank, but there are streaks of texture which are striking. I guess in their abstract form, we each see our own goals and aspirations. Isn’t it ironic that hell is under ground, however all the heat in my house comes from the top? Actually, sometimes it comes from the sides, but this really isn’t the most important subject which you or I need to cover.

Preparation is transparent at the end of the presentation. Because the end result, however so simple, creates another automation of complication which yields ridiculously results of supreme awesomeness. Do not underestimate your initial reaction. The guise is revealed under, “first is the best”. Further, being that most people are not inclined to doubt themselves each idea is weighed with an imbalance. If another iteration is wrong, the previous was more right. If the subsequent contribution is true, it was still the second choice where there is a false pretense that the initial could have been a superior judgment. Funny how those things work. Remember, learn from all mistakes.

Looking to see which microphones are bringing most excellent stereo separation brings to light the obvious truth: SBD (xlr out) > V3 (optical out) > Nomad JB3 @ 44.1 khz. Still, YMBS2005-10-08 is crazy nasty sound.

I lost track. My apologies; we shall continue this post as planed. Pictures in order.
Widespread Panic struck North Charleston at the beginning of November.

Bobby Lee parked his RV outside Gottrocks in Greenville, SC over the Thanksgiving weekend to entertain beside members of The Bridge. He is a class act and even played Saturn’s Around the Bend for me.

I cannot help but be the latter.

Other nights it comes down to pizza sacrifice at Christan’s. Whoever decided that they stay open until 3 AM was a genus.

Get out the tents and set up the floods
Bring in the trucks and make some more mud
Then get the hell out of my way ’cause I’m gonna get wasted
As magic gasses fill the air
It’s bad for your health but I don’t care
This’ll all be gone tomorrow but we’ll still be able to taste it
The golden chord is frayed. what was that song they played
Our steed lies melting in the sun
They flooded the parking lot, out tent begins to rot
And I’m in love with everyone.

I know everything will be alright
My time’s comin’ but it’s not tonight
So let’s keep going ’til the morning light if it’s free I’ll take it
I know everything will come back ’round
Five white horses on an ocean of sound
Until it all comes crashing down like the walls of Jericho

Stop, children, what’s that sound
Another bunch of phreaks just rolled into town
In a broken down bus with a crew that’s fallin’ to pieces
You got to get up, stand up, walk a straight line
Been drunk for three days but you’re doin’ fine
Just a little bit out of your mind but you’re takin’ it easy
All you really need is one more hour of sleep so you
Lay your head upon the floor
Just a little sleep before it gets too deep
You wake up come back for more

I know everything will be alright
My time’s comin’ but it’s not tonight
So let’s keep going ’til the morning light if it’s free I’ll take it
I know everything will come back ’round
Five white horses on an ocean of sound
Until it all comes crashing down yes I know we can
Make it to the other side
Everything is blowin’ my mind
The man on the magic tricycle would like to take you for a ride.

Umphrey’s McGee and the Disco Biscuits took turns rocking the Pavilion Wednesday night. Umphrey’s started it out during the day with a smaller but dedicated crowd. People rolled in until well after the Disco Biscuits started playing. I got some sweet tapes out of it. We ran about 45′ FOB 8′ high, 24″ right of center. The sound was tweaked where the bass was right in the sweet spot. Either way both bands were excellent and everyone had a great time.

Big thanks to the crowd and security for making the venue such a great success.

After the big show everyone dispersed to do their bidding. Balloons seemed present and welcomed. Everyone needs a good laugh. That being said, we made our way to Obit to check out Tucker’s fantastic Wednesday Night Music Showcase where the Kings of Belmont (K.O.B.) rocked it out with a high energy infused rocking party. People were getting down while Max tore notes well into the night.

Back again with another edition of Joe’s Music Picks. March has brought good things musically to the people of Hooville. Highlights include not only Tea Leaf Green, Larry Keel and Natural Bridge, but also the upcoming Galactic concert. Spring is upon us, let the music warm our hearts. Music brings all the people together, it brings “we over me”.

Looking ahead, April is going to be solid.

04/05: Antibalas*
04/11: Toubab Krewe* or Trans Am, Zombi, and Psychic Paramount`
04/19: Robert Randolph & The Family Band^
04/22: Acid Mothers Temple`
04/26: Rose Hill Drive`
04/28: Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band#

* Starr Hill
` Satellite Ballroom
^ Charlottesville Pavilion
# Outback Lodge

Grudge Match of the month is Toubab Krewe vs Trans Am. I’m still not sure which I will goto, new age indy craziness or good old hippy get down. I dig the psychic electronic sound of indy and am more or less just discovering it. Major props to Satellite for delivering the goods. On the other hand, I haven’t ever caught Toubab and would love to see them take Starr Hill down. Acid Mothers Temple is a must see. Touring from Japan, AMT shows America how psychedelic rock is done.

Will Satellite continue bringing the goods and top the big guy on the hill’s lame top 40 replays or will Starr Hill wake up and deliver some quality music over the rehashed RIAA quick bucks? I hope so because competition is good. If not for that you get the same old garbage. Starr Hill used to deliver in spades twice a week, now we are lucky to get the phatty goodness twice a month. All things equal though, Coran does bring the love through the Pavilion and perhaps the Jefferson will reopen as a premere midsize venue, however only time will tell.

Did I miss anything? Let me know.

A little sentimental touch… I haven’t seen Leftover since I went to my very first music concert back in 1996, Charlotte, NC for Widespread Panic. Leftover opened and played during the set break for the Spread. Quite a gap I have had; not seeing them in over 10 years! Anyway, perhaps this will motivate me to hit the Sierras for once. Why not travel all the way across the county to see them once, only to travel back across the country to see them again?

Please remember Larry Keel is coming to Starr Hill this Thursday and you can see some more kickin’ slam grass.

Starr Hill has lined up four excellent bands in the final two weeks of March. Hopefully the venue can deliver some solid bands for the Spring but so far we have only a twinkle of the energy delivered in 2006. Looking forward, April is already highlighted by Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra hailing from Brooklyn and Toubab Krewe from Asheville, NC.

On the Corner we always have the Wednesday Night Music Showcase at Orbits, which showcases bands from Charlottesville. You never know what guests might play, previously members of Parliament sat in during some Man Mountain Jr. Meanwhile, In April Satellite Ballroom will feature Acid Mothers Temple; a psychedelic rock band from Japan.

to continue to try and to manage more and more responsibilities at work and at home. this includes the art thing. balance is key and something i’m trying to achieve without it overwhelming/frustrating me. what can i say? i can be lazy.

to be a better counselor at the group home that i work for.

to not worry so much and to enjoy things more.

and finally, to create more live paintings this year than i ever have prior. so, with that in mind, Friday night was a nice little kick off to the year at Frankfest. check out my blog for specifics if you’re interested…here’s the painting in the meantime, lovelies.

i post this to FREAK THE EFF OUT! i’m honored that EO would even think to have me back. i was lucky enough to paint for them for three nights this past Fall, 10/06-10/08/06 and was able to sell two out of the three paintings i created. the music was amazing, the musicians top notch and the experience one to remember. i’m certainly pleased to say the least that they think enough of my work to want to have me back. :) God is good.

here are the three that came about from the run this Fall…
